Born out of a love for wanting to be the difference in the rescue world, Pupcakes Rescue was established by our lead behaviourist Liz after she fostered dogs with behavioural issues for local rescues to help alleviate the strain on overflowing shelters. It soon became apparent that there was a real gap in the rescue world for dogs that had a bite history or complex behavioural needs. After realising there was nothing for these dogs and finding out that euthanasia was the most suggested option, Pupcakes was born.
Initially helping to rehome traumatised Romanian rescues with no U.K. back up and unclaimed strays, Pupcakes has evolved into a sector leader, and is now one of a handful of rescues in the country to safely rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs with complex behavioural issues and bite histories from across the UK.
Pupcakes take on the most vulnerable dogs, particularly those at risk of euthanasia. Working with animal organisations across the country including big names like the RSPCA , Battersea, The Dogs Trust and Woodgreen who we are so proud to partner with.
The rescue steps forward for dogs that cannot be placed with other rescues due to foster restrictions, or a lack of experience with dogs with more challenging needs and offers a lifeline to dogs unable to be safely rehomed with the general public until extensive behavioural work is carried out.

Here at Pupcakes we dedicate ourselves to working with dogs that display mild-severe behavioural issues and have had a high success rate in managing triggers and finding homes that can continue the training put in place to kerb any negative behaviours that need continued management.
Unfortunately dogs who have bitten have very few options, even in the rescue community, as many rescues are foster based and won’t have suitable insurance or in-house behaviourists to safely assess and handle them.
I can explain a little bit about our rescue premises so that you can have a better understanding of what we can offer every rescue dog that is under our care;
Pupcakes rescue are fortunate enough to own and live onsite an extensive portion of land with multiple open grassed paddocks, training/agility paddocks and a small wooded area. It is very rural and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life giving dogs the perfect chance to decompress and feel safe.
The property features it’s own luxury, heated kennels for our rescues. This way the dogs are safe and comfortable and we can rehabilitate them without worry as we do not have volunteers imposing on the dogs’ safe spaces. This also means that we can encourage a calm and quiet environment so that the dogs stay as stress free as possible dealing with the same handlers as they build trust in them.
Although the word kennels can strike fear into people, ours are very different to those found at bigger organisations as we like to adorn all of our spaces with toys, cosy beds, hanging hammocks in their outdoor areas, raised beds and lots of brain teaser toys to keep them entertained when not out for walks in the paddocks. We have low walls to encourage interaction with ourselves so the dogs don’t feel cut off and if residents are dog friendly then we set up a buddy system so that they have company to play and rest with as not to feel alone when transitioning into their new environment. We also have people onsite 24/7 so the dogs are never on their own.
We have desensitisation play areas that the dogs spend time in alongside livestock with dog friendly dogs to help with prey drive/animal fear and reactivity. We also have on site stooge dogs to work with our rescues.
Where many rescues rely on donated food and cheaper brands to feed their residents, we invest in a high quality food that supports allergies, sensitive stomachs and calm temperaments.
We offer basic grooming so that the dogs can show off their best side when meeting potential adopters. We have a extensive system put in place to make sure that we find only the very best families for our rescue dogs, to ensure that every adoption is successful. All applicants are put through 3 rigorous stages before they meet the specific dog that they have committed to and a final meet and greet stage to see how the dog and applicant interact.
